Dreamy Film Engagement Photos in San Francisco | Nevada & Ari

San Francisco is one of those cities that feels cinematic in every season, which is part of why I love photographing engagement photos in San Francisco. As a San Francisco engagement photographer, I’m always excited when couples want their session to reflect their real lives in the city. Rather than visiting only the most popular landmarks, Nevada and Ari chose locations that were meaningful to them. From their neighborhood coffee shop to the famous Lombard Street just a few blocks from where they live, their session was relaxed and sentimental.

Starting the Session at Home

We began the session at Nevada and Ari’s apartment, which immediately set a natural tone for the day. At-home moments always bring a certain authenticity to engagement sessions. It allows couples to relax in their own space, interact naturally, and include the little pieces of their everyday life that make their relationship unique.

Of course, their dog had to make an appearance as well. Including pets in engagement sessions is always a fun way to add personality. Those early moments at home created a cozy beginning before we stepped out to explore their neighborhood together.

A Walk Through Their Neighborhood

From their apartment, we walked to one of their favorite local spots: Saint Frank Coffee. Neighborhood coffee shops often hold so many everyday memories for couples, which makes them wonderful engagement photo locations. Instead of a staged environment, the setting feels lived-in and real.

After grabbing a few photos there, we continued our walk through the neighborhood toward Swensen’s Ice Cream. This stop was especially meaningful for Nevada and Ari because it’s a place they often visit together. In fact, Nevada described her perfect date as dressing up, grabbing a drink at a moody bar, and finishing the evening with Swensen’s ice cream before strolling through the city as it comes to life.

Incorporating places like these is one of my favorite parts of photographing engagement photos in San Francisco. The city offers endless visual variety, but the most memorable sessions are often the ones that include places couples already love.

A Stop at Lombard Street During Their Engagement Photos in San Francisco

After our neighborhood walk, we hopped on a bus and made our way to Lombard Street. Known as one of San Francisco’s most recognizable streets, Lombard is famous for its winding curves and beautiful views. But for Nevada and Ari, this location meant even more.

They actually live just a few blocks away, so taking photos there felt especially personal. Rather than simply being a well-known landmark, Lombard Street is part of their own story.

Even though the weather that day was classic San Francisco (cold, gray, and a little gloomy), it added a softness to the photos. The overcast sky created beautiful, even light that worked perfectly for couple portraits.

Ending the Session With a Photobooth

To wrap up the session, we grabbed an Uber and headed to a photobooth for a few final photos. Photobooths bring such a playful and nostalgic element to engagement sessions. The experience feels spontaneous and a little bit retro, which perfectly matched the relaxed energy of the day.

These moments are often some of my favorites because couples can completely let go, laugh, and simply enjoy being together. The resulting images feel so full of personality.

Capturing the Session on Film and Digital

One of the elements that made Nevada and Ari’s session especially fun was photographing it on both digital and film. Film photography brings a softness and timeless quality that many couples love, especially for engagement sessions.

For this session, I used my Nikon F100 and Olympus film cameras along with Portra 400 and Portra 800 film. These are known for their beautiful color tones and ability to capture light in a very organic way. The film images added warmth and depth that complemented the digital photos perfectly.

Combining digital and film allows couples to experience the best of both worlds… the versatility of digital photography and the nostalgic feel of film. The result is a gallery that feels both modern and timeless.

Choosing Meaningful Locations for Engagement Photos in San Francisco

Nevada and Ari’s session is a great reminder that the best engagement photos in San Francisco often come from locations that are meaningful to you. Whether it’s the coffee shop you visit every weekend, a favorite park, or the street where you first started building a life together, these places add authenticity to your photos.

When couples choose locations connected to their story, the session naturally feels more relaxed and personal. Instead of posing in unfamiliar places, you’re simply spending time together in spaces that already feel like part of your relationship.
